Favourite Quotes
Here is a collection of meaningful quotes taken from several publications. Most of them are IT related, as you will see. We cannot hold a torch to light another's path without brightening our own. We should be proud of human accomplishments and not just gay accomplishments. People often talk about their city being a gay-friendly city.
Toronto's not a gay-friendly city. It's a gay city. It doesn't get any gayer than this. The [HTML] standard has been in a strange place for years now... many, many sites still heavily use pure HTML, but it is used in radically different ways by everyone. This is a bad place for a standard - and the technologies that rely on it - to be. When a standard is stagnant, but still in heavy use, developers and software vendors begin to get very creative in coming up with ways to make the standard work with modern technologies and requirements. This can often lead to proprietary coding, which leads to fragmentation and a return to sites that work differently for different browsers and systems. I've blogged, I've podcasted, I've written about backups and always the basic message is: You do it. You do it now. You do it regularly. It's not taboo to have multiple partners. In fact, I'd recommend it. There's nothing wrong with using, say Small Business Server backup at midnight and having Iomega do another one at 3 o'clock in the morning. The more the merrier. Save your data, save your business, lower stress, be happy, the list goes on. You can even sometimes get a discount on business insurance with a good backup solution. Saying that devices are Ethernet-compatible is like saying that your washing machine and your refrigerator are 117-volt AC-compatible. It only means that they use a common resource; it doesn't mean that they have anything useful to say to each other. IB doesn't require brilliance nor a ton of hard work, it just requires willingness to jump through hoops - many of them. It’s like trying to recreate the Mona Lisa out of Lego pieces. Even if I had all of the pieces…the final image is boxy and distorted… nothing like the original. The best reason to farm out nonstrategic IT chores is to free up time for the stuff that matters. Mathematical topics that used to be considered higher math are increasingly in the mainstream of an enterprise IT administrator's concerns. Near the top of any modern-day IT pro's to-do list might be information security, network capacity planning and supply chain optimization projects. Just as "one man's trash is another's treasure," one man's commodity is another's competitive edge. A (bleep)ing Centrino PowerBook? I can't even imagine a (bleep)ing Centrino PowerMac. |
